Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Shamrock Rovers: Pavlyuchenko, Defoe, Dos Santos great-finish

Tottenham recovered from a goal down to overcome a doughty Shamrock Rovers 3-1 with six minutes of real class in their Europa League clash at White Hart Lane.

Stephen Rice's 50th minute goal put the unfancied visitors in dreamland as the travelling supporters were left utterly delirious and a historic victory appeared to be a possibility for a fleeting passage of play.

But three goals in six minutes saw Tottenham break the visitors' hearts with Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe on target in quick succession, and a third from Giovani Dos Santos capped a clinical and ruthless response from the hosts.

Harry Redknapp promised to again rest the vast majority of his first team but Aaron Lennon - who overcame a groin strain - and Defoe were handed starting berths, while former Spurs midfielder Rohan Ricketts was confined to the substitutes' bench for Rovers with defender Craig Sives passing a late fitness test.

It was a frenetic opening with Rovers forced firmly back inside their half, and Tottenham unleashed a barrage of pressure on Richard Brush's goal from the outset.

There was a cluster of half-chances early on, but the first clear-cut opportunity fell to Pavlyuchenko in the 19th minute as the Russian combined with Thomas Carroll to good effect, only to see his run ended abruptly as Brush smothered the ball at his feet.

Rovers were constantly held under the cosh, and the woodwork denied the hosts in the 34th minute as Dos Santos jinked inside two challenges before his looping effort lobbed brush and cannoned off the crossbar to safety.

Five minutes later, Danny Rose whipped over a testing corner from the left, and Pavlyuchenko headed powerfully on target with Rice clearing off the line with a timely last-ditch intervention to again thwart the forward.

Both managers made changes at the break as Redknapp withdrew Lennon to afford Andros Townsend a run out, while Michael O'Neill brought on Conor McCormack and Enda Stevens at the expense of Stephen O'Donnell and James Paterson, respectively.

Just five minutes after the break, Rovers were in front as McCabe saw his initial free-kick parried away unconvincingly by Carlo Cudicini, and Patrick Sullivan's follow up shot was turned in by the perfectly placed Rice to send the visitors into delirium.

The hosts piled forward in their droves thereafter, and a fierce onslaught ensued with Rovers pegged firmly back inside their own half for sustained spells of pressure.

Rovers' lead lasted all of 10 minutes, however, as Pavlyuchenko levelled with a powerful header inside the box to convert from Dos Santos's exquisite cross from the left, and Spurs were level on the hour mark.

No sooner had the visitors gathered themselves, than Spurs were in front. Just 78 seconds after Pavlyuchenko's equaliser, Townsend whipped over a pinpoint delivery into the box, and Defoe stooped low to head beyond Brush and put Spurs in front.

Spurs were suddenly rampant with Rovers' belief draining away, and an inspired run from Defoe saw the forward jink incisively in from the left as he beat three challenges and squared the ball to Dos Santos, who fired a clinical strike beyond Brush. It was the Mexican's first goal for Tottenham since February 2009.

Both Redknapp and O'Neill made their full allocation of subs in the closing minutes for very different purposes, but it was the weary Rovers who had the final chance: McCabe went down inside the Spurs box, but the referee ignored the visitors' vehement appeals for a stoppage-time penalty.

The club could have picked up a quarter of their annual budget if they had preserved their 1-0 lead, but it was a valiant effort from Rovers, while Redknapp's Tottenham go level on points with Rubin Kazan at the top of Group A after coming through a testing encounter.

Odense 0-2 Fulham: Johnson great-double

An Andrew Johnson brace gave Fulham a hard-fought 2-0 victory over 10-man Odense in their Europa League Group K clash at Tre-for Park, Thursday 29/09/2011.

Johnson gave Martin Jol's side a 36th-minute lead with a low drive which Odense goalkeeper Stefan Wessels inexplicably allowed to squirm through his grasp.

A clinical second strike from Johnson two minutes from time saw Fulham clinch an important away win which puts them second on goal difference from Dutch outfit FC Twente in Group K with Kalilou Traore's late red card an ugly irrelevance.

Henrik Clausen was openly wary of the threat caused by the west Londoners - who came into the match on an eight-game winless streak in all competitions - and Fulham produced a performance to vindicate the Odense coach's caution.

Odense boasted a host of Premier League experience in their squad, including former Wigan midfielder Andreas Johansson, ex-Everton keeper Wessels, former Bolton and Hull enforcer Bernard Mendy, and Manchester United flop Eric Djemba-Djemba.

The visitors could have led as early as the seventh minute as Johnson ran at the Odense back four from deep and combined with Clint Dempsey, before the move culminated in Pajtim Kasami driving a low shot on target with Wessels did well to block away with his legs.

But Odense came closer to netting an opener in the 12th minute as Johansson drifted over a testing cross which Bashkim Kadrii flicked into the path of Baye Djiby Fall, but his effort was athletically tipped wide by Mark Schwarzer down low to his left and at full stretch. It was a quite magnificent save.

Fulham were perhaps unfortunate not to have been awarded a penalty in the 34th minute after Mendy lunged in recklessly on Kasami, only to concede a corner; and from the resulting set piece, Dempsey had a header cleared off the line by Traore.

Two minutes later, Fulham were in front. Dempsey surged down the left before feeding Johnson, who jinked inside and drove a fierce shot which somehow found its way through the hapless Wessels, who seemed to gather the ball, only to let it evade his grasp. Fulham have never lost a game in which Johnson has scored, and it was the assurance the visitors needed.

Just five minutes after the break, Schwarzer was again called into action as the Australian made a fine reflex save to deny Kadrii, who continues to look dangerous, unleashing a rasping drive from the edge of the box.

Philippe Senderos endured a torrid evening as he was run ragged by Fall and Kadrii, and the lumbering Swiss defender was booked for a last-gasp lunge as Traore fired agonisingly wide with just Schwarzer to beat.

Clausen introduced forward Peter Utaka in an attempt to inject some additional firepower into his side, but Fulham preserved their lead with stout defending on the most part as Brede Hangeland shone.

The Fulham players and staff were left apoplectic with rage after the excellent Matthew Briggs was scythed down crudely in what looked a horrific challenge from Traore, who was only booked for the infringement. Briggs continued gingerly, but the visitors felt very aggrieved.

Fulham defended obdurately deep inside their half, but the tension was finally alleviated after Johnson latched on to a long ball from Hangeland, took the ball down into his path and curled an exquisite finish past Wessels and into the far corner of the net.

Another dreadful challenge from the hot-headed Traore, this time on Damien Duff, saw the midfielder earn the second yellow card and the dismissal the Fulham players believed he deserved earlier in the match, but by this point the match was beyond the hosts.

It was a deserved victory for Fulham in a fiercely-contested encounter, and the three points put Jol's side joint-top of Group K, behind FC Twente only on goal difference after two games with a trip to Wisla Krakow next up on October 20.

Valencia 1-1 Chelsea: Lampard great-strike, Soldado penalty

Valencia successfully force a 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea. Coming from behind until the last minute, El Che finally survived thanks to goals from Roberto Soldado penalty.

In the match at the Mestalla on Wednesday (28/09/2011) , Valencia was nervous at the beginning of the first half. As a result, they were dominated by the visitors. Even so, no goal is created in the first half.

In the second half, the game runs more exciting. First Chelsea goal by Frank Lampard.

The victory The Blues are already in sight shattered in the last minute. Salomon Kalou made mistakes Valencia get a penalty. Soldado to be the executor did not waste it.

A draw is not changing the position of Chelsea at the top of Group E with four points. While Valencia was ranked third with two points.

The game

Threaten Chelsea Lampard free kick in the 14th minute. However, goalkeeper Diego Alves to secure the ball was still spry.

11 minutes later, the home team get a golden opportunity. Starting a cross from the left wing Jeremy Mathieu, just flick Pablo Hernandez hit the Chelsea goal nets.

Last chance in the first half belonged to Valencia when Hernandez fired volley from outside the penalty box. But, the ball was right leads into the arms of Petr Cech.

Fernando Torres almost scored at minute 51. Jose Bosingwa's cross from the right wing perfectly capable gored, but Alves is wonderful to be brushed off the ball.

Within two minutes later, Alves made two fantastic rescue. First, when he dispels Ramires flick in a duel one on one. Shortly thereafter, he was also able to block the shot Torres from close range.

Finally, who could conquer Alves is Lampard. In the 56th minute, his shot welcomes horizontal feed Florent Malouda's goal rattled the home team.

Valencia have a chance to equalize in the 71st minute. But, Pablo Piatti volley from inside the box can be countered by Cech.

Four minutes later, Chelsea goalkeeper Cech again secure. This time, Sofiane Feghouli hard kick from outside the box can be tamed.

Malouda wasted a chance to double Chelsea's advantage in the 78th minute. Free-standing in the penalty box, his shot was too weak.

Four minutes ahead of normal time running out, Valencia get a penalty after Salomon Kalou handsball in a restricted area. Roberto Soldado is so executioners carry out their duties perfectly.

Until the long whistle sounded, the score 1-1 to be accepted by both teams. OL Marseille 3-0 Dortmund: Ayew double, Remy great-strike

Andre Ayew grabbed a brace whilst Loic Remy notched a fine goal of his own as Marseille strolled to a 3-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund in France.
Ayew scored against the run of play in the opening half before Remy capitalised on a rare Matt Hummels error to take the French side to 2-0.

Ayew grabbed his second of the game from the penalty spot after French international Remy was fouled inside the penalty area.

Marseille weathered the storm in a rather uncomfortable opening 20 minutes where Mario Goetze should have scored one of his two chances.

The hosts soon found their feet though and proved to be the much better side during the opening 45 minutes.

It was the visiting side, who have been far superior domestically this season, that started in a much more positive manner.

Dortmund looked to control play instantly and passed the ball around well, pushing high up the pitch and forcing the Ligue 1 side to defend deep.

Despite that, it was Marseille that were the first side to have a decent chance when on the counter attack. Jeremy Morel tore down the left wing before cutting the ball back into the path of the onrushing Luch Gonzalez on the edge of the penalty area.

The attacking midfielder looked almost certain to at least hit the target but could only manage an air shot as he took his eye off the ball at a vital moment.

Dortmund continued in their dominance on the ball but were unable to find that killer ball to create a decent chance.

That was until the 19th minute when Mario Goetze was sent through on goal from a fine lobbed through ball. The 19-year-old raced into the box and checked his run from the left, beating the covering defender before sending the ball towards the far post.

Marseille’s keeper, Steve Mandanda, read it well though and flew to his left to beat the ball away. The hosts failed to clear their lines though, which allowed for Goetze to have another go. This time he elected to shoot towards the near post, but again Mandanda was on hand to make the save.

The hosts looked rattled, but just two minutes later they found themselves in the lead.

Matthieu Valbuena found Loic Remy mid-way into the Dortmund half with a clever reverse ball. Remy turned his man before squaring the ball to Ayew, who was standing on the left of the penalty area.

The left winger took one touch to take the ball away from his feet before unleashing a fierce drive past Roman Weidenfeller and into the far right-hand corner.

From then on, Marseille seemed to find their feet and looked in control of the opening half but were unable to create anything of real importance until the 37th minute when Ayew could have scored an almost identical goal.

This time it was Valbuena who fed the winger but Ayew’s shot was slightly too central which allowed for the Dortmund custodian to make a fine save down to his left.

It was quite obvious that Dortmund boss Juergen Klopp had a few words to say to his team at half time as they started the second half superbly.

They were very sharp when passing and were moving superbly well – proving too much for the hosts.

After seven second-half minutes the visitors could, and probably should have been level as Goetze spurned a superb chance.

Kevin Grosskreutz cut in from the left to send a whipped ball towards the far post. The 19-year-old German international, Goetze, stormed in unmarked but could only sidefoot the ball past Mandanda into the foot of the right post.

Dortmund continued to play the better football and looked the more likely of the two sides to score, but again they were caught on the break and conceded a second after 63 minutes.

Kabore clibbed a ball cross-field towards Remy but it seemed that covering defender Hummels was to cut out the pass. Instead, he made a mess of the clearance and played the ball into the path of the Marseille striker who took one touch on his chest before firing low into the bottom right hand corner.

Six minutes later and it was game over as the home side were awarded a penalty.

The ever-tricky Valbuena produced another display of silky footwork down the left to beat his man and race to the byline. The French winger cut the ball back into the path of Remy who controlled neatly before being bundled to the ground by Sebastian Kehl.

Ayew stepped up to take the spot kick, smashing it down the centre of the goal away from Weidenfeller who had dived to his right.

The game looked all but over, but the visitors kept on plugging away and were unfortunate not to grab a late consolation – and their first goal in France in four attempts.

The dangerous Goetze forced Mandanda into a smart stop after 70 minutes with a fine glancing header towards the far post.

Jakub Blaszczkykowski was then introduced and was immediately in the thick of the action as he rose highest in the penalty area to meet Goetze’s corner. The imposing striker could only head his effort over the bar from 10 yards though.

With just two minutes to go, the Dortmund forward went even closer as he again beat the covering defender in the air to meet fellow substitute Lucas Barrios’ centre. The Polish striker, who has Kuba on the back of his shirt, beat Mandanda with the effort but failed to beat the crossbar.

The only factor that marred an impressive victory for the Ligue 1 side was that late substitute Jordan Ayew, brother of Andre, was sent off for two yellow cards; a sloppy challenge and quite ridiculous dive in the 90th minute.

BATE Borisov 0-5 Barcelona: Messi double, Pedro, Villa great-finish

Lionel Messi became the joint second highest goalscorer in Barcelona’s history as the Spanish side enjoyed a 5-0 win in a mismatch of a Champions League tie against minnows BATE Borisov at Minsk’s Dynamo Stadium, Wednesday 28/09/2011.
Messi’s double – one in each half in a desperately one-sided Group H encounter – saw the little Argentina playmaker equal the haul of 194 scored by Hungary’s Laszlo Kubala in the 1950s.

Barca’s all-time club record of 235 is held by Cesar Rodriguez who played for Barca between 1939 and 1955, but Messi will surely overtake that total in the near future.

Pep Guardiola’s side enjoyed 80 percent of possession in a game that was probably a bad advert for the group stages of Europe’s top competition such was the uneven nature of the contest.

If UEFA president Michel Platini thinks nights like these are good for the competitive element of such a tournament, he needs to lie down in a darkened room.

BATE did all they could to unsettle the Champions League holders – including narrowing the pitch – but were left chasing shadows before a crowd of 41,000 that ended up drooling over the Spanish side’s movement.

Barca never looked back after Aleksandr Volodko flicked Dani Alves’ cross into his own net under pressure from the buzzing Lionel Messi on 19 minutes.

BATE were still licking their wounds when they conceded for a second time on 22 minutes.

This time Pedro was on hand to head home a cross from David Villa for his second goal of the season in the competition.

With Barca simply cutting open the home side like it was a training exercise, it was of minimal surprise to see Barcelona add a third goal of the night on 38 minutes.

Home goalkeeper Alexsandr Gutor opted to bounce the ball into the ground from Pedro’s cross, and Messi displayed razor sharp reflexes to nod into the gaping net for a third goal.

Messi slipped a shot past the post minutes before the break from Villa’s pass as BATE somehow staggered off the pitch only three goals behind.

Messi cracked a majestic shot beyond Gutor with his left foot from inside the home area after being played in by Alves on 55 minutes. The chances kept coming as it became apparent that BATE did not have the class to score their first goal in the competition against a side such as Barca.

Villa made it 5-0 in the final minute when he slipped the ball through Gutor’s legs after a tiring BATE had needlessly squandered possession in their own half.

Zenit St Petersburg 3-1 Porto: Shirokov double, Danny, Rodriguez scored

Zenit St Petersburg came from a goal behind and dominated the game. The result, they managed to achieve a 3-1 victory over FC Porto.

Zenit defeated by APOEL in the first Group G match two weeks ago did not want to repeat a similar story. Shown in front of his own supporters, at Petrovski Stadium on Wednesday (28/09/2011), releasing offensive play with 18 shots throughout the game.

They managed to take advantage of the player, after sending off Porto defender Jorge Fucile in the 45th minute, with two additional goals in the second round. Earlier, both teams played equally strong in the first round 1-1.

Napoli 2-0 Villareal: Hamsik, Cavani scored

Napoli inflicted a second successive Champions League defeat on Villarreal, as the home side ran out 2-0 winners at the Stadio San Paolo.
Marek Hamsik and Edinson Cavani struck within three minutes of each other early in the first half to seal all three points for the hosts and see them move into second place in Group A.

The Italian side took the lead after just 14 minutes when Ezequiel Lavezzi was allowed to control the ball on the right before turning and whipping in an in swinging left footed cross. It found an unmarked and onside Hamsik who volleyed the ball first time low past Diego Lopez. It was a smart finish, but Villarreal coach Juan Carlos Garrido will have been horrified by the amount of space Hamsik was allowed in the heart of the Villarreal penalty box.

The Azzurri's lead was doubled just two minutes later when Juan Camilo Zuniga played Lavezzi through. The Argentinian out-paced Gonzalo Rodriguez in the Villarreal defence, before his Argentine compatriot clumsily slid in. Despite his protest, the defender was unable to get a touch on the ball as Lavezzi nipped it past him clearly bringing down the striker. Cavani confidently stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way with the penalty.

Villarreal's best chance of the game fell to the lively Giuseppe Rossi in the 31st minute. Cavani found himself in an unusual position deep in his own half. The Uruguayan tried to play a back pass to Morgan De Sanctis, but the Azzurri's top goal scorer instead laid the ball on a plate to Rossi, who, through one on one with De Sanctis, wildly, and uncharacteristically skewed his first time shot wide.

In a frantic second half Villarreal saw more of the possession and showed more spirit but struggled to create any clear cut chances against a resolute and well organised Napoli defence.

Any threat from the Yellow Submarine came from striker Rossi. He was inches away from winning a penalty in the 56th minute when, as he exquisitely clipped the ball one side of Paolo Cannavaro and ran the other, he was cynically blocked off by the Italian defender. Despite Rossi's protests, the referee adjudged the foul to be right on the edge of the area rather than in it. Cannavaro also escaped with just a booking.

Nilmar also had a penalty claim waived away late on as Zuniga seemed to come through the back of the striker, but Belgian referee Frank De Bleeckere indicated the midfielder had won the ball.

Napoli had the best chance of scoring in the second half, and killing off the game, when Cavani was put clean through in 65th minute. But the Azzurri's top goal scorer fluffed his lines as he failed to control the ball properly allowing Christian Zapata to clear. From the Colombian's challenge Cavani stayed down, and later limped off. Napoli will hope the talismanic forward we be fit for the rest of the campaign as theyhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif look to escape the group of death.

It was an impressive performance by the Italians who successfully built on their decent performance at the Etihad Stadium. The result means that Manchester City will have a real battle on their hands to get out of what is looking an increasingly tough group.

Olympique Lyon 2-0 Dinamo Zagreb: Gomis great-chip

Lyon ended a six-match run without a Champions League win against a poor Dinamo Zagreb side, securing a comfortable 2-0 win at the Stade Gerland.
Both goals came in the first-half through France striker Bafetimbi Gomis and Bakary Kone.

With Ajax losing 3-0 to Real Madrid in Pool D’s other tie, the victory puts Remi Garde’s side in a strong position to progress to the knockout stages for the ninth consecutive time.

The French side were good value for their win and could have scored many more goals as they created chance after chance against a Dinamo side that simply could not cope with their pace and trickery.

With the boisterous Lyon faithful in fine voice, it was left to Lyon’s top scorer Gomis to open the scoring with a sublime chip over the onrushing Ivan Kelava in the Dinamo goal on 23 minutes. Gomis was a handful throughout, yet he had been profligate, missing two gilt-edged chances either side of his piece of individual brilliance, when put clear.

With the pacy Michel Bastos on the left and Jimmy Briand and Maxime Gonalons making headway the other flank, the Dinamo Zagreb full-backs were having a torrid time.

The French side had several more chances in the first-half and it was not until the 42nd minute that they doubled their account. Clement Grenier whipped over a corner and Bakary Kone, left unamarked in the six-yard box, stroked home the second goal of the evening past a flailing Kelava.

Just seconds before half-time Dinamo Zagreb were lucky not to be 3-0 down as Grenier was thwarted by Ivan Kelava in the Dinamo goal after a classy piece of close control.

Whatever Krunoslav Jurcic - a squad member at the Stade de Gerland when Croatia defeated Germany 3-0 in the UEFA 1998 World Cup - said to them, it did not have the desired effect. Young Brazilian Sammir seemed to be the only Dinamo Zagreb player to show any urgency, but within minutes of the break, Gomis had again gone within inches of adding to the scoreline.

The second-half became increasingly scrappy with yellow cards shown to Jerko Leko and Sammir for sloppy fouls. Lyon were happy to sit back and wait for Dinamo to chase the game, yet there were further chances for Grenier and Gomis’s replacement Alexandre Lacazette as Lyon opened up the visitors defence at will. Unfortunately they were unable to put the ball in the back of the net to ram home their total dominance.

As for Dinamo Zagreb, who had been out of the competition for 12 years, they offered little in creativity and motivation. Hugo Lloris was rarely tested in the Lyon goal, but when he was called upon, he was alert, making smart saves from Leko and Sammir.

Coach Krunoslav Jurcic will now need all of his motivational powers to rouse the Croatian giants if they progress into the knockout stages.

Getafe 1-0 Real Betis: Castro great-finish

La Liga leaders Real Betis' 100 per cent start to the season was ended after they lost 1-0 to Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, Monday 26/09/2011.
Diego Castro's 31st-minute strike saw the struggling Madrid side register their first win of the campaign and move out of the relegation zone.

Despite suffering their first defeat after winning promotion back up to the top flight last term, Betis remain top of the table after five matches, one point above defending champions Barcelona.

Roque Santa Cruz started up front for Betis but the striker, on loan from Manchester City, was unable to replicate the form which saw him score twice in the 4-3 win over Real Zaragoza last time out.

Getafe manager Luis Garcia Plaza was adamant that his players were performing better than their league position suggested, and they backed up his claims by taking control of the first half after a shaky start.

Pedro Leon, back at the club on loan just a year after he was sold to Real Madrid, fired an early shot wide before seeing his long-range free-kick punched away by Betis keeper Inaki Goitia.

Right-back Juan Valera was a constant threat down the flank for Getafe, and his canny diagonal ball over the top caught the Betis defence flat-footed, only for Castro to fail to get a telling touch on the pass.

Valera had more success in picking out his team-mate on the half-hour mark, when his cross went over the pack inside the box and fell for the unmarked Castro to take a touch and fire into the roof of the net. The goal was Castro's first for the club since his summer move from Sporting Gijon.

Getafe had done well to nullify the creative impact of Salva Sevilla for most of the first half, and 10 minutes after the break the playmaker was replaced by Betis boss Pepe Mel for another striker in the form of Jorge Molina.

That substitution almost paid dividends when Molina rose highest to meet Jonathan Pereira's cross only to glance his header wide. Moments later Pereira himself forced a good save from Miguel Angel Moya in the Getafe goal before Santa Cruz's header was blocked.

The final quarter of an hour was very open as Getafe substitute Pablo Sarabia had a shot from a wide angle saved by the legs of Goitia and Santa Cruz's shot on the turn was parried by Moya.

Betis had one final chance in the 90th minute when Benat Extebarria's strike from range drew a brilliant save from Moya as the strike was bound for the top corner, a stop which secured a vital three points for the home side.

Norwich City 2-1 Sunderland: Bannet, Morison scored, Richardson superb-strike

Norwich City beat Sunderland 2-1 in their Premier League clash at Carrow Road, Monday 26/09/2011.

Goals from Leon Barnett and Steve Morison put the hosts in control, though Kieran Richardson pulled one back four minutes from time to ensure a frantic finish.

Although the Black Cats made a positive start, the chances started to come at Simon Mignolet's end. The Belgian keeper comfortably dealt with Steve Morison's sighter but was grateful when Wes Hoolahan looped a shot over the bar following an error of judgement by Titus Bramble.

Nicklas Bendtner looked in the mood and the on-loan Dane did well to pick out Craig Gardner, only for the midfielder to fire a deliberate attempt to curl the ball way off target. Bendtner then took a touch to control a Stephane Sessegnon pass before working John Ruddy for the first time with an impressive snap-shot.

Both teams appeared capable of breaking the deadlock and Norwich struck just past the half-hour mark. Speedy winger Elliott Bennett played a fine one-two with David Fox and crossed invitingly for Barnett to beat Mignolet from close range.

Carrow Road was rocking and even the classy Wes Brown started to show flaws, gifting the ball to Hoolahan, whose shot deflected well wide.

Bendtner dabbed a volley off target after some intelligent work by fellow Scandinavian Sebastian Larsson as half-time approached but few would begrudge the Canaries their half-time lead.

And Paul Lambert's side went further in front nine minutes after the interval when they had a man over down the left and Paul Tierney chipped a cross into the path of Morison, who buried a classic centre-forward's header past an exposed Mignolet.

The hosts looked comfortable until a dreadful mistake by Bradley Johnson let in Bendtner but Ruddy made an instinctive save to keep out one of Sunderland's better perfomers. Although substitute Connor Wickham directed a fine cross by Ahmed Elmohamady at Ruddy, City continued to create chances of their own with the lively Bennett working Mignolet and Russell Martin failing to capitalise on the rebound during a breakaway.

James Vaughan came on for Norwich and shot wide before going off injured and Bruce's side were handed a lifeline when a patient build-up ended with Richardson's sublime drive, which flew past Ruddy with the aid of the slightest of deflections off Barnett.

With City down to 10 men, the Black Cats tried to crank up the pressure but Ruddy and his defence stood firm for a valuable three points that moves the newly-promoted side into the top half ahead of their weekend assignment at Manchester United.

Sunderland simply must do better as too many of their players - Brown and Bendtner aside - will have failed to impress the loyal travelling support.

Parma 0-1 AS Roma: Osvaldo superb-header

Luis Enrique's Roma enjoyed their first victory of the season in Serie A as they won 1-0 at Parma courtesy of a Pablo Osvaldo header at the Stadio Ennio Tardini, SUnday 25/09/2011.
Osvaldo netted his second goal in two games on 50 minutes when he rose to plant the ball beyond home goalkeeper Antonio Mirante from 10 yards out after a fine cross by Aleandro Rosi in the Sunday night match.

Roma coach Enrique was hoisted up in the air by a member of the Roma coaching staff at full-time having endured an indifferent start to life as the Rome club's head coach with a defeat and two draws in his opening three matches in Serie A.

Roma extend their unbeaten record against Parma to 13 matches. They have won 10 of those, and were good for this victory despite failing to add to their one-goal advantage.

Roma move up to 10th spot in the table, but Parma are in the bottom three with only one win from their first four games in the league.

Parma have now shipped nine goals in the first four games of this season having conceded nine in their previous 11 Serie A fixtures.

Roma keeper Bogdan Lobont made a decent save to repel an effort by Sebastian Giovinco on 28 minutes, but Roma should have been ahead 11 minutes later when Mirante blundered badly.

The keeper nudged a drive by Francesco Totti onto a post that he should have held, but Osvaldo could only hit the keeper as he failed to slot the rebound.

Osvaldo almost added a second goal on 61 minutes when he drifted beyond Massimo Gobbi, but his shot flew narrowly wide of Mirante's right-hand post.

Jonathan Biabiany was culpable as Parma blew a golden chance to equalise on 73 minutes.

Biabiany galloped beyond a toiling Gabriel Heinze, but instead of squaring for the unmarked Giovinco in the middle he opted to go for goal as his shot flew wide with only Lobont to beat.

Totti saw a drive flash wide of the target on 74 minutes, but Parma could not find the equaliser they craved as substitute Abderazak Jadid failed to force the ball over the line after Crespo had flicked on Giovinco's corner.

QPR 1-1 Aston Villa: Bannan penalty, Traore sent-off, Dunne own-goal

Richard Dunne's late own-goal gave 10-man Queen's Park Rangers a 1-1 Premier League draw against Aston Villa at Loftus Road, on Sunday 25/09/2011.

The Villa captain put through his own net in the third minute of stoppage time, as an attempted Stephen Warnock clearance ricocheted in off the luckless Irishman.

Dunne is the Premier League's record own-goal scorer, and increased his tally to nine with this latest misfortune.

It cancelled out Barry Bannan's controversial 58th-minute penalty, which was awarded for a slight shirt-pull by Armand Traore, who was sent off late on for a second bookable offence.

A draw was probably a fair result after a fiercely competitive encounter in which six Villa players were booked.

After last week's win against Wolves, QPR boss Neil Warnock lamented the focus on Joey Barton's personal feud with Karl Henry, which rather ignored a fine team performance.

Another unwanted consequence is that Barton has become the Premier League's ultimate marked man - the equivalent of somebody playing football with a large 'KICK ME' sign stuck to their back.

When Stephen Warnock flew into a rash challenge a few minutes before half-time, you did not need to ask who had just been left in a crumpled heap.

Such is Barton's lot these days, though his competitive instinct is robust enough to relish the physical challenge.

Barton's arrival risked marginalising last season's player of the season Adel Taarabt, who lost the captain's armband to the controversial midfielder.

But the Moroccan was in lively form here, smacking the outside of Shay Given's post with an audacious banana shot early on.

That set the tone for a long spell of Rs dominance, and Taarabt might have scored when fed inside the box by Shaun Wright-Phillips, but he saw his effort deflected for a corner.

Jay Bothroyd then flashed a header wide from a Barton corner - for all his all-round play Bothroyd is not a natural finisher and such a player will surely be high on Neil Warnock's January shopping list.

Villa hit back late in the first half, coming close through a superb Bannan free-kick that brought a diving save from Paddy Kenny.

The visitors' dominance continued after the break, when Fabian Delph saw one goalbound effort blocked, and prodded just wide when he beat the onrushing Kenny to a ball at the edge of the box.

Referee Michael Oliver caused controversy when he penalised Traore for his microscopic infringement on Gabriel Agbonlahor. It was a tough decision - there was a tug of the shirt, however slight, but Agbonlahor certainly made the most of it.

Bannan converted with a low effort that just beat the diving Kenny's glove to the right corner of the goal.

Shaun Wright-Phillips came close to levelling with a low shot that brought a brilliant save from Shay Given, before referee Oliver turned down Rs penalty appeals when Alan Hutton blocked a goalbound Shaun Derry header with his hand.penalised Traore for his microscopic infringement on Gabriel Agbonlahor. Oliver turned down a second, less convincing appeal, for handball against Hutton, before Traore saw red for a reckless foul.

Just as Loftus Road threatened to explode with frustration the equaliser finally came.

Subsitute Heidar Helguson crossed low from the left, and Stephen Warnock could only clear into the body of Dunne, which diverted the ball into the Villa net.
