Tottenham 3-1 Wigan: Bale double, Modric great-strike

Gareth Bale reignited Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League title challenge with a brace in their 3-1 victory over Wigan at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham, who are now five points behind both Manchester clubs, took the lead through Bale, who collected Luka Modric's sweeping pass and squeezed the ball inside Ali Al-Habsi's near post.

Spurs lost Rafael van der Vaart to injury but doubled their lead moments later through Modric, who drilled in from 20 yards.

Bale doubled his tally for night with a trademark finish into the bottom corner, before Wigan pegged the home side back through James McArthur's deflected effort.

Bale, playing Wigan on his own at times, could have scored a hat-trick but was thwarted twice late on.

Tottenham's title hopes seemed to have been derailed after their 3-2 defeat at the Etihad Stadium last week.

But with Manchester City's slip-up at Everton, Spurs, who were inspired by the exceptional Bale, were relentless early on against Wigan.

Younes Kaboul twice had clean headers cleared off the line - first by Al-Habsi and then by James McCarthy.

Spurs had Wigan pinned inside their own half for long periods and almost unlocked the Wigan defence when Van der Vaart's extravagant lofted ball over the Wigan defence found Niko Kranjcar, but the Croatian couldn't quite bring down the high ball.

Spurs eventually took the lead just before the half hour and, predictably, it came via the effervescent Bale.

Collecting Modric's sweeping long pass on his chest, Bale cut in from the right before tucking the ball past Al-Habsi inside the near post.

But Spurs were dealt a blow moments later when Van der Vaart's injury curse struck again as the Dutchman limped off with a calf problem.

If Tottenham were affected by the loss of their talisman they certainly didn't show it, as they moved 2-0 up courtesy of Modric.

Maynor Figueroa's attempted clearance ricocheted off Jordi Gomez and straight to Modric, who fired in from the edge of the box.

Wigan toiled for a route into the game with Victor Moses, who fired just over, coming closest to halving Tottenham's lead.

But Spurs were never unduly worried and Bale made it three just after the hour with an expert finish.

Shifting the ball onto his left foot on the edge of the box, Bale bamboozled James McCarthy with a deft drop of his shoulder and explosive finish into the bottom corner.

But Wigan weren't done and, on the balance of play, deserved their consolation when it came ten minutes from time courtesy of the substitute.

Latching onto a pass by Moses, McArthur squeezed a shot in that deflected off Parker, and looped over Brad Friedel and under the bar.

Rather than shut up shop, Tottenham's attacking instincts got the better of them as they persistently pushed for a fourth.

Both big chances fell to Bale, who brought a one-handed save out of Al-Habsi after a mazy run and shot.

Then, deep into injury time, there were shades of the San Siro as Bale left Figueroa in his wake before forcing another first class from Al-Habsi with a low shot across the Omani goalkeeper.

The win was less of a spectacle than their record 9-1 routing of Roberto Martinez's side in 2009, but leaves Spurs close enough to the Premier League summit to be considered challengers again.

Newcastle 1-0 QPR: Best superb-finish

Mark Hughes's tenure as Queens Park Rangers manager began with a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James' Park that leaves his new club in the Premier League relegation zone.
Leon Best's well-taken strike on 37 minutes means that – just as with the Welshman's first matches in charge of Manchester City (defeat at Aston Villa) and Fulham (goalless draw at Bolton) – Hughes begins a third successive job without a win.

QPR remain in 18th place, below Blackburn Rovers on goal difference, while Newcastle move above Liverpool into sixth place as they extend their 100 per cent start to 2012 to three matches.

Rangers' run without a win since mid-November is what did for Neil Warnock's tenure at the club, but the Londoners began life under new boss Hughes brightly on Tyneside.

With less than a minute on the clock the Rs' top scorer Heidar Helguson fired an ambitious low shot from range right at goalkeeper Tim Krul. That set the tone for the opening stages in which Akos Buzsaky marked a rare start with a swerving strike that Krul beat away desperately and Shaun Wright-Phillips fired in a strike from the left that clipped the top of the crossbar.

Newcastle's recent malaise looked to have been dispelled following back-to-back wins over Manchester United in the league and Blackburn in the FA Cup, but their uncertain start here was compounded by an injury to key midfielder Yohan Cabaye midway through the first half.

The Frenchman was caught on the ankle by QPR enforcer Shaun Derry, who received a booking for a challenge which will add to the current debate over what constitutes a reckless tackle.

With top scorer Demba Ba and midfield general Chieck Tiote both away at the African Cup of Nations and centre-back Steven Taylor ruled out for the season, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew could have been forgiven for fearing the worst when Cabaye left the pitch on a stretcher.

However, the introduction of Hatem Ben Arfa helped to compensate for that loss, and the home side set about asserting their authority in front of their home crowd.

Ryan Taylor had a low drive from range tipped around the post by Paddy Kenny, but soon afterwards the Magpies were ahead. Taylor fed Best inside the area and the Republic of Ireland striker tricked his way past Luke Young with some nimble footwork before calmly side-footing a finish around Kenny and into the far corner.

Best's fourth goal of the campaign consigned Rangers to a 12th-straight league game without a clean sheet.

The visitors could have been level soon afterwards when Jay Bothroyd's strike appeared to have the beating of Krul but clipped the outside of the far post, but their failure to convert any of their 10 attempts on goal saw them go into the break a goal down.

QPR continued to create chances after the break - Bothroyd fired over the bar and forced a near-post save from Krul within 10 minutes of the restart – but they remained unable to convert any of their myriad chances into goals.

Jonas Gutierrez obeyed the crowd's instructions to shoot after Kenny had come rushing off his line to clear the ball for a throw, but Danny Gabbidon was back to head the Argentina winger's effort clear and spare his keeper's blushes.

Ben Arfa continued to look a threat whenever he had the ball, often requiring two QPR players' attention when he was in possession. Hughes threw on Tommy Smith and Federico Macheda, but if anything those introductions had a detrimental effect on his team's attacking potency and Newcastle were able to play keep-ball in the closing stages and seal a win that takes them above Liverpool by a point.

Madrid plays his first round with the bad. In the 10th minute they almost conceded an attack that was built from Mallorca. From a cross Hemed, Victor Casadesus successful past Casillas with his heel, but the ball was still rolling on the side of the goal.

Two minutes later another stab Mallorca to Madrid penalty box, before Casadesus fell after a duel with Lassana Diarra. Kubu Los Bermellones requested a penalty, but the referee ignored him.

Mallorca continues to look dangerous, and again had the opportunity in the 28th minute. Hemed made it through Sergio Ramos, but ultimately did not meet with a touch of the target area, thin-wide in the goalkeeper Casillas.

Hemed then broke the score at minute 39. Starting from short Korner, Gonzalo Castro off a cross into the penalty box, and Hemed diving header which goalkeeper dismantle Los Blancos.

Madrid's chances in the first round is very limited, except through a volley Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo free kick. The most dangerous is when Ramos kick from Xabi Alonso's free kick hit the crossbar.

In the second half Mourinho put Higuain and pull out Diarra. In the 59th minute he also took off Kaka and Fabio Coentrao to the field, replacing Alvaro Arbeloa and Marcelo.

Aston Villa 1-1 Everton: Bent, Anichebe great-finish

Darren Bent gave the home side the lead from close range, but Everton equalised when substitute Victor Anichebe latched onto a pass from Landon Donovan in the 69th minute.

New loan signing Robbie Keane was restricted to a 10-minute cameo role off the bench for Aston Villa, who welcomed back Shay Given after a six week lay-off with a hamstring problem.

Darron Gibson made his debut for Everton, while injuries to Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka meant a first league start for Shane Duffy at the heart of defence. Royston Drenthe also came in.

Aston Villa produced an insipid performance in the first-half, although it was they who registered the first shot on target as Tim Howard pushed away Stiliyan Petrov's free-kick in unorthodox fashion. Two-thirds of Howard's body appeared to be over the line as he made the save.

Tim Cahill just failed to latch onto a terrific long pass from Gibson at the other end, and the returning Given then made an excellent low save to deny Louis Saha who headed a Leighton Baines' free-kick powerfully towards goal.

Everton were well on top in the first-half and will argue they should have had a penalty in the 22nd minute. Donovan crossed for Saha after a fine run down the right and as the Frenchman attempted to make contact with the ball, he appeared to be pulled back by Alan Hutton.

Everton continued to press and Given was forced into a fantastic reflex save to stop Stephen Warnock capping a poor first-half display with an own-goal. The former Blackburn defender headed a cross towards his own goal and Given sprung to his left to beat the ball away.

Gabriel Agbonlahor finally gave the Villa fans something to shout about as he evaded two Everton players before curling in a low shot that Howard did well to push around the post.

Given made an unorthodox save of his own after the break as he blocked a powerful Marouane Fellaini header with his upper arm.

But Villa came out with far more purpose after the interval, and it was they who broke the deadlock when Bent fired a low Stephen Ireland cross into the roof of the net from close range.

Bent then connected with another Ireland cross and Howard had to be on his mettle to save his low header.

Although Villa dominated the second half for long spells, Everton will believe they deserved their equaliser, which came in the 69th minute via Anichebe. The Nigerian had only been on the pitch for eight minutes after replacing Drenthe when he ran onto a pass from Donovan and slid the ball low beyond Given. Marc Albrighton was culpable as instead of tracking the striker he appealed for an offside flag that never came.

Neither side looked like finding the winner in the final 20 minutes, despite Keane's late introduction as a substitute.

Given was called upon to block an Anichebe shot that looked to be heading off target but it ended all square in a match between two sides who will find it difficult to press for a European spot on the evidence of this encounter.

Albion looked the most likely to find a winner, but a superb Norwich counter ended with Grant Holt crossing for Morison, who made no mistake from close range.

The Canaries were looking to avenge a 1-0 defeat to the Baggies back in September, courtesy of a third minute goal from Peter Odemwingie.

But since that early autumn loss, the East Anglians have eclipsed their opponents and, with just one defeat in six matches, sat six places and three points ahead of Roy Hodgson's men coming into the return.

As Albion's injury crisis began to ease, Jerome Thomas, Paul Scharner and Youssouf Mulumbu all returned to the starting line-up, while Norwich manager Paul Lambert made five changes to the team that beat Burnley in the FA Cup, including bringing back goalkeeper John Ruddy.

The Baggies had failed to find the net in the last three Premier League matches, but a morale-boosting Simon Cox hat-trick in the 4-2 FA Cup victory over Cardiff had The Hawthorns faithful eager for more.

And it was the hosts who came closest to opening the scoring after five minutes.

Odemwingie was given time and space on the edge of the box only to see his rasping drive somehow pushed onto and over the bar by the sprawling Ruddy.

It was the visitors, themselves fresh from putting four past Burnley, who next hit the woodwork.

A flick looking for Morison was cleared by the sliding Ben Foster straight into the Norwich man's legs and rolled agonisingly off the outside of the West Brom post.

The let-off galvanised the Baggies, and Odemwingie should have done better with a shot that flew well wide of Ruddy's post before the Norwich keeper awkwardly palmed an Odemwingie cross narrowly over the incoming James Morrison.

In a rare foray, Simeon Jackson hooked a snapshot beyond Foster's post, but as Albion continued to press, Ruddy again denied Morrison, stopping his dinked effort.

Ayala then survived a penalty appeal after clipping Jerome Thomas's foot and Surman was in the right space to clear Morrison's left-foot volley off the line.

And West Brom's failure to convert their chances came back to haunt them with two minutes of the half remaining.

A quick Norwich counter saw Jackson hold the ball up for Wes Hoolahan and the skipper showed good vision to pick out Surman who fired past Foster.

Albion were immediately on the front foot as they looked for a leveller after the restart.

Morrison fired well over the bar before Scharner also blasted off target when the cross seemed the better option.

Morrison again wasted another opportunity with another wayward effort and was almost made to pay when Jackson tested Foster at the other end.

Hodgson reacted by bringing on Long for Odemwingie and Graham Dorrans for Scharner to an almost instant impact as Long swivelled in the box only for his shot to ricochet off Ruddy's legs.

But the West Brom man was not to be denied for long. Thomas swept into the box and was halted by a reckless challenge by Ayala.

Referee Mike Dean deemed the offence worthy of just a yellow card, but Long's cheeky spot-kick sent Ruddy the wrong way to make it 1-1.

As the hosts pressed, Craig Dawson missed a gilt-edged chance when he headed straight at Ruddy from eight yards out, but it was Norwich who struck the telling blow.

Youssouf Mulumbu overran the ball on the edge of the Norwich box and a swift and incisive counter-attack released Holt who perfectly picked out Morison to finish, despite Foster's desperate attempt to keep the ball out.

Norwich saw the rest of the match out comfortably and while the win sees the Canaries further consolidate their comfortable ninth place, Hodgson is once again casting an eye over his shoulder at the foot of the table.

Blackburn Rovers secured a highly valuable 3-1 home win over Fulham thanks to goals from Morten Gamst Pedersen, David Dunn and Mauro Formica, after Steve Kean’s side recovered from the early first half sending off of Ayegbeni Yakubu to put in an impressive display.

The striker was given a straight red for a challenge on Danny Murphy after 23 minutes, but a rousing response from Rovers saw Pedersen give them the lead right on the stroke of half time from a free-kick.

Dunn doubled the lead less than a minute into the second half before Damien Duff scored against his former club to give Fulham some hope. Martin Jol’s side were unable to make their numerical advantage count however and substitute Formica sealed the victory with just over ten minutes remaining to deliver an important three points for the under-pressure Kean.

After a relatively uneventful opening 20 minutes the game sprung into life when Bobby Zamora struck the top of the right post with a looping header, having been Fulham’s most impressive and active player. Moments later Blackburn’s task was made all the more difficult by a sending off for their top scorer Yakubu.

The striker went in high with his studs up, catching Murphy and leaving referee Anthony Taylor with little choice but to pull out the red card. Kean was forced into a tactical change as he introduced David Goodwillie in the place of Radosav Petrovic, one of his two substitutions that would prove instrumental in Rovers’ victory.

Paul Robinson’s excellent reflex save to deny Philippe Senderos maintained parity as half time approached, and Pedersen then struck with the last kick of the half from a set piece. Murphy’s push on Dunn set Pedersen up and when David Stockdale took a step in the wrong direction it left the Fulham goalkeeper unable to stop the Norwegian’s effort from giving Rovers the advantage.

Dunn struck just 56 seconds into the second half when he followed up a blocked Junior Hoilett shot with a rasping effort, and things were looking good for the home side. However, Duff’s similarly controlled effort ten minutes later pulled one back for Fulham as the Irishman put away his 50th Premier League goal, one which also means Blackburn have now conceded in all their 21 league games this season.

Fulham continued to push but Blackburn were dangerous on the counter attack, and Formica – on in place of Dunn – was presented an opportunity by Steven N’Zonzi whose inspired scooped pass over the Fulham back line set the Argentine up.

He obliged with a cool finish, making it 3-1 as Blackburn successfully saw out the last ten minutes to take only their third win this season at Ewood Park having lost six of their last seven at home.
