Stoke 2-2 Wigan: Caldwell sent-off, Jerome, Moses great-finish

Wigan Athletic hit back to earn a 2-2 draw with Stoke City in the Premier League at the Britannia Stadium.
The visitors took the lead when Victor Moses converted a cross from Hugo Rodallega just before half-time, but Stoke levelled after Gary Caldwell was sent-off for a handball on the line, with Jonathan Walters converting from the spot.

Substitute Cameron Jerome looked to have won it for the home side with a 77th minute strike, but Ben Watson's penalty moments later salvaged a point in a thrilling finale at the Britannia Stadium.

Peter Crouch returned for Stoke after missing the last two matches with a virus. Robert Huth recovered from a knock sustained in the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa to take his place in defence, but Glenn Whelan missed out with a calf injury. Andy Wiliamson, Rory Delap and Jermaine Pennant were all recalled to the side.

Wigan made one change from the team which lost 5-0 at Manchester United, Rodallega replacing Conor Sammon in attack.

Stoke made most of the early running, but it was Thomas Sorensen who was called into action in the first few minutes as he made low saves from, first Jordi Gomez, and then Rodallega.

Stoke continued to enjoy the territorial advantage, with Jermaine Pennant's crossing and Rory Delap's long throws causing panic in the Latics defence.

Wigan, though, came close when Ronnie Stam's dipping long-range shot was tipped over by Sorensen.

Rodallega then raced onto a long ball, lobbed it over the onrushing Dane, only for Ryan Shawcross to head the ball out for a corner.

Stoke failed to register a shot on target in the first-half and Wigan were rewarded for their superior cutting edge when they took the lead a minute before the break.

Stam set Rodallega free down the right and the Colombian crossed for Moses who fired into the roof of the net.

Stoke came out with intent in the second-half, but again struggled to create chances until Robert Huth rose to head a long Delap throw against the inside of the post. The ball bounced off the upright and into the grateful hands of Ali Al-Habsi.

Jerome's introduction as a substitute in the 73rd minute would prove highly significant as the former Birmingham City striker helped win a penalty and then put his side ahead.

Barely a minute after his arrival, Jerome's low header was handled on the line by the otherwise impressive Caldwell, who earned a straight red card for the offence. Jonathan Walters drilled the resulting spot-kick past Al-Habsi.

Seven minutes later, Stoke were in the lead as they turned the match on its head. Walters headed on a Peter Crouch flick, and substitute Jerome ran onto the ball and curled low into the bottom right corner.

Such drama raised the decibel level significantly, but the home supporters were silenced moments later when Ryan Shotton was adjudged to have brought down Rodallega in the area by referee Michael Oliver.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez decided to bring on Ben Watson to take the penalty with his first kick of the match. Watson duly replaced David Jones and hammered his kick past Sorensen in the Stoke goal.

Wigan remain in the relegation zone but will take heart from a spirited performance at the Britannia.

Bolton 1-1 Wolves: Ricket superb-strike, Fletcher header

Bolton Wanderers will start the New Year at the bottom of the Premier League table after playing out a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.
Sam Ricketts gave the home side the lead at the break with a wonderful strike from the edge of the box, but a Steven Fletcher header at the start of the second half condemned Bolton to their first draw of the season and a place at the foot of the table.

Given the importance of the situation after the stunning Old Trafford result, an understandably tense opening 20 minutes saw chances at a premium, Jussi Jaaskelainen forced into a fairly comfortable save from Fletcher's drive.
With Wolves defending deep and allowing the hosts plenty of early possession, Ivan Klasnic nearly got a shot away from David Ngog's neat through ball but Richard Stearman came across well to block the chance.

It needed a moment of inspiration to spark the game to life and Sam Ricketts provided just that. Picking up the ball midway inside the Wolves half down the left flank, he cut inside to unleash a superb curling shot into the top corner giving Wayne Hennessey absolutely no chance.

The goal seemed to sting Wolves into action towards the end of the half, Stephen Ward rattling Jaaskelainen’s crossbar with a fierce drive. Still, it would have been harsh on Bolton who were playing the better football and they could have gone further ahead just before the break, the industrious Petrov feeding Klasnic who should have done better with his tame shot.

If the first half was a cagey affair, the second was frantic in comparison and this time it was Wolves who caught Bolton cold, Fletcher stealing in front of the Chelsea-bound Gary Cahill to nod in Jarvis’s corner at the back post.

Fabrice Muamba saw his shot bundled behind by Henessey but after that, it was Wolves who looked the more likely to win it in the last twenty minutes, the home side nearly the architects of their own destruction when Tuncay’s attempt at a defensive clearance was blocked on his own line by Mark Davies.

The result does neither side any great favours heading into the New Year, only four points separating 16th placed Wolves with the new bottom feeders. And with Cahill off to pastures blue, Owen Coyle will be wondering where to turn to next to arrest Bolton's defensive frailties.

Sunderland 1-1 Everton: Colback score, Baines controversial-penalty

Sunderland and Everton shared the spoils after drawing 1-1 in a turgid affair at the Stadium of Light.
Substitute Jack Colback opened the scoring for the Black Cats after 26 minutes, before a controversial penalty awarded early in the second half was put away by Leighton Baines.

Everton had chances at the death to take all three points, but it was the Sunderland players who were left fuming after that iffy penalty call.

The opening period was short on incident and enlivened only by a couple of flashes of brilliance from Sunderland's Stephane Sessegnon.

It was Everton who had the first real chance of the match after a quarter of an hour. A corner was swung in to the back post where Louis Saha was left completely unmarked. He made poor contact with the ball though and it went harmlessly wide.

Moments later Sessegnon hit a lovely first time pass on the volley to Nicklas Bendtner, but the Dane was well marshalled by Tony Hibbert who was the last defender.

It would be the man from Benin that did eventually create the opener. He received the ball just outside the area, feigned to shoot but laid off for the substitute Jack Colback - who had replaced the injured Titus Bramble - and his first time shot deflected off the sliding Sylvain Distin and over Tim Howard.

Royston Drenthe came close soon afterwards as his drive from 25 yards whistled just wide of the near post, but Everton created little else in the opening 45 minutes.

The second wasn't much better in terms of quality and Everton needed a poor call from the officials to get back on level terms. On 51 minutes Leon Osman surged into the area unopposed, and went to ground as he looked to shoot. There was no contact though; the midfielder had just kicked the ground rather than the ball, causing him to lose balance.

The Sunderland players protested, but Baines did well to block out the commotion and blast his penalty into the top corner.

Most of the remainder was taken up by Sunderland pumping hopeful balls into the area, with Everton looking to hit on the break. There were half chances; Saha almost scored an own goal, Howard nearly dropped into his own net, while at the other end Drenthe failed to win a debateable penalty.

In the last minute of the game Everton should have nicked it. Osman met a ball in the area from 12 yards, but his effort was blocked for a corner. And from the resultant set piece Distin had an even better chance with the final kick of the game at the back post, but he struck his effort from six yards well over the bar.

Another chance to come home at 44 when Suarez to puncture into the penalty box and toss the ball to the far post to mengumpannya on Maxi. But the ball going too fast and powerful that it failed to meet targets and actually fell in the net above.

Halftime ahead of Liverpool goalkeeper collapse caused by players themselves. Daniel Agger had touched the ball Pedersen corner kick, from the moment Adam stretched his legs that actually makes the ball into his own goal. Scores changed 0-1 to Blackburn.

Lucky for the host because they did not have to wait long to equalize. Precisely at minute 53 Maxi evened the score to 1-1 using his head to Martin Skrtel continued feedback.

Suarez in the 59th minute almost scored his second goal, but his efforts continued feedback from the right side was wide thin. Entering 69 minutes Dalglish make the turn in his squad, after a long absence through injury Gerrard finally make a comeback by going to replace Adam.

At the last minute of injury time period, the Reds have a chance to score decisive victories over the head of Skrtel. But Grant Henley hero his team after he dispels the ball right at the goal line.

Bolton 0-2 Newcastle United: Ben Arfa, Ba great-strike

Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba scored two minutes apart as Newcastle won 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium to condemn Bolton to yet another Premier League defeat.
Newcastle were superior throughout but had to wait until the 69th minute before taking the lead.

Ben Arfa came off the bench to make an immediate impression, finishing a slick move with an accomplished first-time finish.

Ba added a second with a close-range finish two minutes later to put the shine on a defeat that leaves Bolton in deep trouble.

Newcastle had not won since changing the name of their stadium last month but Ryan Taylor, who scored the winner in that game against Everton, came closest for the visitors in the 14th minute.

Nonchalantly curling a free-kick over the Bolton wall, Taylor was denied only by Jaaskelainen’s superb one-handed stop low to his left.

Bolton saw plenty of the ball but painfully lacked inspiration in attack, so it was predictable that their best chance of the half also came from a set-piece. This time Tim Krul was on hand to make an even better save from Martin Petrov’s dead ball effort.

Scoring opportunities were at a premium throughout and it was only after the introduction of Ben Arfa that Newcastle started to create chances of genuine quality.

Ben Arfa played off Ba and Newcastle instantly benefited from the Frenchman’s guise and attacking class. So it was appropriate that his strike gave Alan Pardew’s side the lead.

Chris Eagles lost the ball to Jonas Gutierrez, who supplied a pass to Taylor wide on the left. The left-back picked out Ben Arfa, who lashed the ball past the helpless Jussi Jaaskelainen with a superb first-time finish.

Bolton barely had time to dust themselves down before Ba continued his extraordinary scoring run with his 21st goal in 25 Premier League starts.

Darting ahead of Gary Cahill, who is believed to be in talks with Chelsea over a possible January move, Ba steered Gabriel Obertan’s low cross from the right just under the bar.

It was a killer double-blow to Bolton, who saw the ball for long periods but lacked the confidence to convert that possession into clear chances.

Bolton struggled to wrestle control of the midfield from the dominant duo Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye, with the latter particularly impressive.

Owen Coyle introduced Kevin Davies and Tuncay Sanli late on, but the pair could do little to alter the outcome.

Bolton have now lost eight of their nine home games and sit three points away from safety. With games against Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal awaiting in January, the winter continues to look bleak for Coyle's men.

QPR 2-3 Sunderland: Bendtner great-header, Sessegnon solo-run

Wes Brown's glancing header in the 89th minute secured a precious 3-2 win for Sunderland over struggling Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.
Sunderland took the lead through Nicklas Bendtner’s header before Stephane Sessegnon, impressive throughout, doubled their lead soon after the break with a classy breakaway goal.

But it was a lead the Black Cats surrendered.

Heidar Helguson hit back with a bundled finish in the 63rd minute, despite a hint of offside, and Jamie Mackie made it 2-2 with a close range header.

But Sunderland took all three points from this exhilarating contest after Brown scored his first goal since joining the Wearsiders in the summer.

Neil Warnock insisted before this, QPR’s final home match of 2011, that this January transfer window will be the last that the club enter needing four or five players.

But given how inept his side were in all areas against a competent but far from brilliant Sunderland side, Warnock’s estimate may be proved conservative.

QPR started the stronger and it seemed as though their early promise would translate into the opening goal, such was their dominance.

But Sunderland eventually found their feet and, if not for the poor finishing of Bendtner, should have been ahead in the 16th minute.

Sebastian Larsson fizzed a free-kick in from the left, which was flicked on by David Vaughan only for Bendtner to head against the post, with the whole goal at the Dane’s mercy.

But he atoned for his error just three minutes later.

Darting to the near post, Bendtner headed in Larsson’s corner from the right, despite the ball brushing off his shoulder and into the net.

Sunderland controlled much of the game after taking the lead but had Titus Bramble to thank for his crucial goal-line clearance from Helguson's header, which seemed destined for the back of the net.

Instead, the Black Cats' lead was doubled a minute later when Danny Gabbidon was beaten in the air by Bendtner but somehow headed the ball behind him and into the path of Sessegnon.

The Beninese forward, superb all game, showed fantastic composure to feign his shot – sending Paddy Kenny to ground – before tucking into an empty net.

But QPR were seemingly boosted by the half time introduction of Adel Taarabt.

Left in the cold for much of the season, the Moroccan added some much needed flair and creativity to QPR’s attacks and, just after the hour, the west Londoners pulled one back.

Alejandro Faurlin made an excellent run into the inside-left channel to cross for Helguson who, despite appearing to be slightly offside, bundled in from close range.

The goal lifted the home side and less than five minutes later they had their equaliser through Mackie.

Helguson headed Faurlin’s high cross into the six yard box – allowing Mackie the easy task of stooping low to head in his first goal since returning his long injury lay-off.

QPR looked the more likely to score a third, but Sunderland weathered the storm and, with six minutes of injury time looming, Brown chose a great moment to score his first goal for the club.

The former Manchester United defender met Kieran Richardson’s inswinging corner from the right with a glancing header. Faurlin tried desperately to head off the line but could only head the ball further into his own net.

Brown reeled away in delight as his winner silenced Loftus Road and confirmed QPR’s pressing need to invest in new players if they are to avoid being dragged into a relegation dogfight.

Newcastle United 2-3 Westbrom: Odemwingie great-finish, Demba Ba free-kick

Newcastle United lost in the Premier league again as they went down 3-2 to West Bromwich Albion at St James' Park.
Defeat means Alan Pardew's side have now failed to win in six games, while West Brom climb into the top half of the table following this enthralling match.

Demba Ba levelled twice for Newcastle after Peter Odemwingie and Gareth McAuley had given the away side the lead. But on 85 minutes Paul Scharner grabbed the late winner.

The encounter took a while to come to life, but when it did it came in style. On 21 minutes Chris Brunt took out three players with a wonderful pass with the outside of his foot to release Odemwingie. The Nigerian cut across the front of Fabricio Coloccini - who almost brought him down - and arced a shot in off the far post.

Newcastle almost replied immediately, but Ba's goal was ruled out when Leon Best was correctly flagged for offside when nudging the ball back to the Senegalese.

Only 10 minutes later though Ba did get his goal. Jerome Thomas brought down Gabriel Obertan about 25 yards from goal and the striker fired the ball into the top right hand corner. It was a brilliant strike; Ben Foster was wrong footed as he thought Ba would go the other way and got a hand on it, but not enough to get it over the bar.

The edginess in the stadium had gone, but it was to return on the stroke of half-time. Ba tracked back, but committed the foul and from the resulting free-kick Scharner headed back across goal and McAuley was there to meet it with a free header into the empty net.

Again Newcastle almost got the immediate equaliser. Haris Vuckic unleashed from distance, with the ball coming off the bar and post. Ba had an open goal, but the ball was just too far behind him and he nodded over from close range.

Early in the second half Long should have extended the lead as he rounded Tim Krul after springing the offside trap. All he had to do was lift the ball over the sliding defender, but his chip from six yards had too much on it and it came off the bar.

Roy Hodgson probably thought his side would regret that miss as yet again Ba, with just 10 minutes left, put the home side back on level terms. The striker got the ball back after chesting down, turned Jonas Olsson far too easily on the edge of the area and slammed the ball past Foster.

There was to be a sting in the tail from the away side though and it came five minutes later. Long showed tremendous pace to leave Coloccini flailing, his deep cross was expertly nodded back by Odemwingie and Scharner was there to poke the ball into the far corner.

Blackburn 1-2 Bolton: Davies, Reo Cooker, Yakubu score

Bolton held on to defeat Blackburn 2-1 at Ewood Park and leapfrog their local rivals at the foot of the Premier League table.
Mark Davies had given Wanderers the lead in the fourth minute, and Nigel Reo-Coker’s strike on the half-hour mark brought the disgruntled home fans’ fury to a new level of decibels.

Though Blackburn fought back and halved the deficit through Yakubu’s deft finish halfway through the second period, they were denied a strong penalty claim after Bolton substitute Paul Robinson had brought down fellow replacement Ruben Rochina just inside the box.

Owen Coyle’s side were able to hang on to the crucial three points and ease the pressure on the manager, whilst simultaneously heaping even more on his counterpart Steve Kean.
Blackburn will now prop up the top flight standings on Christmas Day, an ‘honour’ which has resulted in relegation to the second tier in almost every season since the Premier League’s formation.

Perhaps sensing opportunity amidst the snowballing cries of ‘Kean out’ from the Rovers faithful, the visitors took the early initiative and from it went into the lead with little over three minutes on the clock.

Shortly after Reo-Coker had forced a parry from Paul Robinson from a tight angle on the right-hand side of the byline, David N’Gog kept the attack going and slipped the ball inside to Davies.

The midfielder moved inside before unleashing a low drive through the home defence and into the back of the net for his first league goal of the season.

Blackburn continued to have trouble settling into the game against their more determined local rivals, with Jason Lowe and Mauro Formica picking up early bookings for rash challenges.

And though they finally looked more comfortable and began to move the ball into Bolton’s final third halfway through the first period, the Trotters would double their advantage on the half hour mark.

A counter-attack sparked by Ivan Klasnic’s aerial challenge saw Martin Petrov and Reo-Coker exchange passes until the former crossed low from the left for the latter to cap the move with a turn and shot.

The final touch may have belonged to Morten Gamst-Pedersen, but it mattered not to the jubilant Bolton players and fans, nor to the furious home supporters who had re-started their anti-Kean chants in full voice.

Only a superlative block by Grant Hanley denied N’Gog a big chance to make it 3-0 on 36 minutes, and as expected the beleaguered home side trudged off at the interval to the sound of boos aplenty.

Though N’Gog and Klasnic each had opportunities to find that daylight shortly after the hour mark, Rovers finally gave their fans something to cheer on 67 minutes.

Given more creative license after the break, David Hoilett weighted his through pass perfectly for Yakubu to beat the offside trap and await the run of Jussi Jaaskelainen before timing his chip over the keeper perfectly.

Now back within a goal of avoiding the dreaded Christmas curse, the hosts were buoyed and really should have had a penalty with 15 minutes remaining following Robinson’s slide in on Rochina.

Though it was close to claiming the ball, the defender made no contact and also caught the Spaniard with his trailing foot, a challenge not too dissimilar to that of Everton’s Jack Rodwell in the Merseyside derby, also overseen by Martin Atkinson.

With skipper Chris Samba up front with Yakubu and Hoilett, Bolton had the opportunity to break in stoppage time in an attempt to kill the game off for good.

But despite good work from Tuncay and Petrov to send substitute Darren Pratley racing into the box, the former Swansea man could only fire wide of the far post from an angle.

The final whistle, as expected, led to the unveiling of more banners in protest at Kean’s employment at Rovers, while Coyle cut a relieved figure as he applauded the travelling support.
