Westbrom 0-2 Liverpool: Adam penalty, Carroll great-finish

First-half goals from Charlie Adam and Andy Carroll were enough for Liverpool to ease past West Brom with a 2-0 Premier League win at the Hawthorns, Saturday 30/10/2011.

Adam put the visitors ahead from the spot after Luis Suarez was felled by Jerome Thomas, and Suarez was involved again as he fed Carroll for the second just before half time.

The Reds were always in control against a lacklustre Baggies side as Kenny Dalglish’s men made it 10 wins out of the last 11 matches against the team managed by former boss Roy Hodgson.

The result puts Liverpool fifth, above Tottenham who play QPR on Sunday, while West Brom lie 13th.

The Game

West Brom were abject in the first half, slow in their movement with and without the ball and shoddy at the back as Liverpool earned a comfortable lead by doing the simple things effectively.

The first incident of note yielded a goal, Jerome Thomas clumsily tripping Luis Suarez in the box, with the Uruguayan not facing goal and referee Lee Mason missing the initial foul but the linesman correctly flagging.

Adam was forced to wait for a few minutes as Carroll and Jonas Olsson rekindled old rivalries, but the Scot kept a cool head as he stroked a left-foot shot into the bottom corner.

While the Baggies toiled to get into the Liverpool final third - Pepe Reina did not have a save to make all half - Suarez and Carroll were combining with interest, the former swinging over an inch-perfect cross for the latter, whose goal-bound header was blocked by the arm of an unwitting Steven Reid, Liverpool’s penalty appeals waved away by Mason.

The ongoing tussle between Olsson and Carroll - who first clashed in the Championship when the latter played for Newcastle - resulted in the first yellow card of the night as the Swede rattled late into the England striker.

The subsequent free-kick saw a terrible miss from Suarez who, for all his excellent approach work, does not have a high conversion ratio: this time he fired over from close range after the ball landed at his unmarked feet.

West Brom had a brief spell of territorial ascendance, with the net result a cross-shot from Somen Tchoyi that just evaded Peter Odemwingie and Thomas at the far post.

An equaliser would have been unjust to say the least, but it did not materialise and Liverpool doubled their lead in injury time, thanks to good approach play but, once more, terrible defending.

After Olsson needlessly gave the ball away, a lofted ball from Adam released Suarez wide right but there was not a challenge in sight as he was allowed to pick out Carroll, who beat the onrushing Ben Foster on the edge of the box to clip a low finish home.

The hosts were marginally better in the second half, as Tchoyi used his physicality to work the Liverpool defence: on one occasional he managed to drill a low shot inches wide, and on another he just failed to turn and finish under pressure from Dan Agger.

The Baggies were still haphazard at the back though, with Liverpool still creating the better chances, Jordan Henderson mis-kicking when put through by Carroll’s knock-down and Suarez denied a volleyed goal by an Olsson block.

Suarez was also giving them no end of grief with his trademark mazy dribbles, although he was unable to find an end product to his fancy footwork, while Stewart Downing fired just wide after a corner routine.

The Uruguay forward appeared unconcerned by allegations of racial abuse by Patrice Evra and he showed another side to his game by using strength to stand the ball up to Carroll, who controlled and half-volleyed to draw a good stop from Foster in a reverse of the usual combination.

The latter stages drifted into a training-ground match, with both sides option for an air of caution but Liverpool having the best chance as a Downing drive hit the woodwork - the 10th time a Reds player has done so this season.

Wigan 0-2 Fulham: Dempsey, Dembele great-finish

Clint Dempsey and Moussa Demble got the goals as Fulham won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic and condemned the hosts to their seventh successive Premier League defeat.
Wigan dominated possession but were by and large toothless up front and Dempsey's 41st minute close range strike gave Fulham the lead against the run of play before Dembele calmly side-footed home the clincher three minutes from time.

It was Fulham's first away win of the season, and only their second in total this season, and moves them up one place to 16th in the table.

Wigan are now bottom on goal difference though after previous incumbents Blackburn picked up a point at Norwich to overtake them.

Both teams named unchanged line-ups despite defeats last weekend and Fulham produced the crisper passing in the open exchanges.

Wigan also received an early blow when Mohamed Diame was on the wrong end of a heavy challenge from Steve Sidwell in just the third minute. He tried to run off the knock but was forced off in the 12th minute with what looked to be an ankle injury and was replaced by James McArthur.

Wigan however, soon grabbed a foothold on proceedings and proved to be the better side for the majority of the half, finding particular joy down the right wing.

Their two best chances came within a minute of each other just past the half-hour mark. First Ben Watson saw his decent half-volley from the edge of the area tipped over by Mark Schwarzer and then from the resulting corner Gary Caldwell headed over when he should have at least hit the target.

Fulham, who played Andy Johnson, Demble and Dempsey in a line behind lone striker Bobby Zamora, struggled to produce anything going forward until they took the lead against the run of play in the 41st minute.

Danny Murphy produced a superb long cross field ball in behind the Wigan defence that put Zamora free down the left. The England striker was then able to run to the edge of the box before rolling a simple ball across the face of the goal for the onrushing Dempsey to side-foot home from close range.

It was Dempsey's 36th Premier League goal, tying the American record for goals in the division that had previously been held solely by another former Fulham man Brian McBride.

The second-half had a similar feel to the first with Wigan pining Fulham back but without testing Schwarzer with nearly enough regularity.

The Australian keeper was beaten in the 54th minute by a lovely dipping half-volley from the lively Victor Moses but the ball cannoned off the crossbar to let Fulham off the hook.

At the other end Zamora hit the bar in the 62nd minute after another long range ball from Murphy cut open the defence and the woodwork was called into action for a third time when Maynor Figueroa's long range strike in the 84th minute clipped the outside of the post.

Wigan's confidence though seemed to drain as the match went on and their hope completely evaporated three minutes from time when Dembele wrapped it up.

The Belgian pouched on a loose ball in midfield and ran towards the edge of the area unchallenged; then as the whole ground waited for him to slip the ball into the unmarked Dempsey, he decided instead to casually stroke the ball into the corner of the net to seal all three points.

The DW Stadium was half-empty to begin with but was then virtually deserted in stoppage time when Caldwell blazed over the bar from close range.

Wigan next face what some might already say is a relegation six-pointer at Wolves while Fulham host Wisla Karkow in the Europa League on Thursday before welcoming Tottenham to Craven Cottage three days later.

Norwich 3-3 Blackburn: Hoilett, Morison, Yakubu great-strike

Grant Holt scored deep into injury time as Norwich salvaged a 3-3 Premier League draw with Blackburn Rovers after trailing 3-1 with eight minutes left in a pulsating contest at Carrow Road.
Steve Kean's side move off the bottom of the table with a point, but they were probably worthy off all three having played the better football for most of the afternoon.

They were only denied by an outrageous decision by the referee Anthony Taylor three minutes into five added on when the ball hit off Steve Nzonzi's arm.

He did not know anything about it, but the penalty was given for substitute Holt to slam the ball beyond visiting goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who almost saved it diving to his right.

Rovers had grabbed the lead when David Hoilett beat two men before smacking a delicious shot beyond home keeper John Ruddy from 20 yards inside first half stoppage time.

Steve Morison clipped home a superb volley from the edge of the area to level for Paul Lambert side's on 53 minutes only for Rovers to strike twice inside three minutes just after the hour mark.

Yakubu beat the unconvincing Ruddy at his near post with a shot from just inside the area before Christoper Samba popped up unmarked to head home Morten Gamst Pedersen's free-kick.

That looked like sealing the win until Bradley Johnson's drive from distance took a wicked deflection off Jason Lowe to fly over Robinson and set up a frantic conclusion that left Kean and the visiting bench looking on in disbelief. Rover continue to search for their first away win in the Premier League, but their main problem seems to be conceding goal.

Blackburn and Norwich are the only teams in the Premier League yet to keep a clean sheet.

Blackburn - boosted by their 4-3 midweek win over Newcastle in the Carling Cup - set about their task with some relish as Mauro Formica accepted a neat pass from Yakubu to wallop a shot narrowly over the bar from 25 yards on three minutes.

Yakubu was at the heart of the action again two minutes later after Ruddy failed to deal with Pedersen's corner, but Norwich frantically hacked the ball clear.

Blackburn continued to create the most notable chances as Yakubu lifted the ball over the bar on 12 minutes after being played in by the evasive Ruben Rochina.

Norwich finally began to find some joy as Robinson dived low to his right to nudge David Fox's shot past a post on 15 minutes.

Bennett was lucky to avoid a straight red card for a late lunging tackle on Yakubu. He was booked after a tackle that was reminiscent of Didier Drogba's red card at QPR last weekend and should have benefited from his good fortune moments later.

The intelligent Morison did superbly well to play in Anthony Pilkington up, but the cross was whacked into the side netting by the unmarked Bennett when it looked easier to hit the target.

Ruddy looked like he had carried the ball over the line from Pedersen's free-kick moment before the break after catching the ball, but did just enough to keep it out. He was helpless to stop Hoilett's howitzer.

There was plenty of huffing and puffing in the second period, but Rovers appeared to have weathered the storm when Morison's played in Holt on 80 minutes only for Gael Givet to clear the danger before Robinson was on hand to make the save from Holt's header.

Swansea City 3-1 Bolton: Allen great-strike, Graham own goal

Swansea City maintained their unbeaten home form this season with a convincing 3-1 defeat of ten-man Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League.
Joe Allen and Danny Graham strikes, either side of a Scott Sinclair penalty, did the damage for Owen Coyle’s Bolton, whose scant consolation came courtesy of an own-goal from Graham.

Prior to the match, with Swansea protecting their strong record at the Liberty Stadium and Bolton’s two wins this season coming from their travels on the road, an intriguing, tightly-knit match was certainly expected.

However, the first-half flattered to deceive; proving to be an ultimately drab affair where the best chance saw David Ngog force Swans ‘keeper Michel Vorm into a fine one-handed save in the 20th minute.

After Chris Eagles’ initial effort was charged down on the edge of the Swansea box, Ngog gathered and his smart-turn-and-shot produced the required acrobatics from the in-form Vorm.

Bolton’s other notable chance came in the 37th minute where Nigel Reo-Coker’s dangerous low cross from the right just needed a deft touch from Ngog to convert but the Frenchman failed in this task, having stretched towards the ball from just a few yards out.

Swansea provided plenty of attacking vigour throughout the opening 45 minutes but their leading strike duo of Sinclair and Graham failed to link-up effectively in order to sufficiently test Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Bolton goal.

Brendan Rodgers men’s only chance of note in a first-half shorn of quality came just before the 10 minute-mark, where Nathan Dyer’s cross from the right was slightly over-hit with Sinclair having ghosted forwards looking to pounce.

No changes were made at the start of the second-half, but the home team began it in fine fettle - Graham dragging a curling effort wide of goal in the 47th minute having been beautifully played in by Sinclair.

Owen Coyle’s Bolton were then up against it just five minutes into the second-half as Gardner saw red for a second bookable offence, after the Jamaican had tugged at Dyer’s shirt.

The deadlock was to be broken moments after Gardner’s indiscretion, as Allen collected a square pass from the resulting free-kick, before proceeding to travel forward and side-foot the ball low and inside Jaaskelainen's near post.

Swansea’s mounting pressure, having secured that opening goal, saw Owen Coyle take off Martin Petrov for the more defensively-minded Paul Robinson - making his 200th Premier League appearance – but it did little to stem the home team’s mounting tide.

After both Dyer and Sinclair tested Jaaskelainen with low, goal-bound efforts, their lead was to be doubled in the 57th minute as former Swans player Darren Pratley, on his first return to his previous club, conceded a penalty for a sloppy challenge, which Sinclair duly stepped up to convert - coolly sending Bolton’s Finnish ‘keeper the wrong way.

With Graham rattling the Bolton crossbar with a flicked header just past the hour mark, it had seemed to be all one-way traffic. But it was to be the Swans striker who would inadvertently give Bolton a way back into the match.

With the visitiors running out of steam, Graham, defending deep in his own half of the field, sliced a delivery from the left flank off of his boot, past a stricken Vorm and into the roof of his own net in the 75th minute.

The fear for the home side then was whether lightining would strike twice after the Swans had given up a two-goal lead away to Wolves last weekend.

That fear was to grow as Bolton brought on Ivan Klasnic and Gael Kakuta for the final ten minutes in search of what would have still proved to be an unexpected equaliser.

However, the home side still ventured forward in search of the third and both Allen and Sinclair were to be the main culprits in failing to extend Swansea’s lead, the latter in particular smashing a Dyer cut-back against the Bolton crossbar in the 84th minute with the goal at his mercy.

Then, in injury time, substitute Robinson was called on to acrobatically head clear a Graham stike off his own goalline as Swansea turned the screw.

Graham wasn’t to be denied in making up for his earlier own-goal though, as the striker calmly slotted home when put clean through in the third minute of stoppage time, to put the finishing touch on a deserved victory for Swansea and pile more misery on an out-of-form Bolton Wanderers.

Blackburn 4-3 Newcastle: Pedersen, Cabaye free-kick, Givet header

Gael Givet's header in the dying seconds of extra-time secured an amazing 4-3 victory for Blackburn after an extraordinary Carling Cup fourth-round tie against Newcastle.
Rovers led 2-0, 3-2 and finally emerged exhausted but triumphant at Ewood Park, while the Magpies saw the end of their unbeaten run this season.

Ruben Rochina and Yakubu had apparently sent Blackburn on their way to a comfortable win, only for Danny Guthrie and Yohan Cabaye to hit stunning injury time strikes to send the game into extra-time.

Morten Gamst Pedersen's free-kick made it 3-2, Peter Lovenkrands equalised again from the spot and then came Givet's last-gasp heroics.

Rovers will argue it was about time the dice rolled for them - because they had appeared to be stacked against Steve Kean's side at kick-off.

Newcastle arrived with the best defensive record in the top flight, and with 4,500 travelling fans making up almost half the 10,682-strong crowd.

For most of the match and deep into injury time Blackburn had played like the unbeaten team, and Newcastle like the bottom club, before it all turned around in those two crazy minutes.

Blackburn started brightly and Junior Hoilett's extraordinary pace took him past two players, but Davide Santon - making his full debut - did well to block Ruben Rochina after he had seized on the cut-back.

Newcastle did not heed the warning however and the 20-year-old Spaniard was not to be denied when given a second opening in the fifth minute.

The chance was created on the left again, Martin Olsson playing a one-two with Hoilett before sprinting down the flank and crossing low for Rochina to sweep home from 12 yards out.

The stage had been set for an open contest and so it continued as Demba Ba fired against the post for the visitors after being put clean through by Danny Guthrie, then David Goodwillie brought a smart save out of the Magpies keeper Tim Krul.

Newcastle's discomfort in defence continued however and Fabricio Coloccini was extremely lucky to only receive a caution when he caught Yakubu high with his foot apparently raised.

Yakubu nearly made the Magpies pay again just before the break but Krul turned aside his curling shot.

The second half began with Hoilett drifting a 20-yard free-kick into Krul's arms, before the travelling fans exploded into indignation after referee Robert Madley refused to award a penalty when Sylvain Marveaux blasted the ball against Olsson's arm.

Yakubu was next to threaten but in the end his effort at Krul was feeble, before two hugely controversial incidents ended up with Blackburn extending their lead.

First Ba tangled with Chris Samba in the Blackburn box but Madley was unmoved, although it looked as though the Newcastle player had a good case.

The ball was swept down the other end to Rochina who beat the offside trap but lost control as Krul approached and then threw himself over the keeper's leg - and bizarrely this time the referee did point to the spot.

Yakubu made no mistake with the penalty - leaving the visiting fans chanting '2-0 to the referee' in frustration.

With Blackburn believing the game was in the bag, Guthrie hammered in a stunning shot from 30 yards.

That strike came in the third minute of injury time, and there were two agonising minutes for Rovers to endure.

There was one more chance for Newcastle - and that was enough. Samba fouled Coloccini 25 yards out and Cabaye curled a delightful free-kick into the top corner to send the tie into extra-time.

Pedersen had sent one howitzer of a free-kick wide but the Norwegian found the target soon afterwards, his drive skimming off the wall and low past Krul.

There still looked to be goals in this game and so it proved when Grant Hanley was penalised for a tug on Lovenkrands and the Dane tucked home the penalty to make it three apiece.

Still Rovers refused to give up the ghost and in the dying seconds Pedersen floated in a free-kick, Samba headed across goal and Gael Givet stooped to conquer at the far-post.

Cue a massive pile-on of Rovers players - this was some match and Blackburn had, finally, deserved it.

Fulham 1-3 Everton: Ruiz, Drenthe,Saha, Rodwell scored

Former Fulham striker Louis Saha returned to haunt his former club this afternoon with a late goal which inspired Everton to a dramatic victory at Craven Cottage.

The 33-year-old netted from an acute angle for the Toffees before Jack Rodwell scored in stoppage time to ensure they ended their three-match losing steak.

Saha's strike came seconds after Bobby Zamora somehow managed to hit the bar despite rounding Tim Howard.

Everton took a third-minute lead after Royston Drenthe hit an audacious shot from long distance that snuck in the far corner.

It looked liked Fulham had earned a share of the spoils, though, thanks to substitute Bryan Ruiz's exquisite chip three minutes after coming on.

However, Zamora's extraordinary miss allowed Saha and Rodwell to score and secure victory for the Merseysiders.

Fulham manager Martin Jol made seven alterations to the side which lost 1-0 in the Europa League at Wisla Krakow on Thursday.

The visitors made two changes to the side which lost 3-1 at Chelsea last weekend, bringing in Drenthe and Apostolos Vellios.

Despite having lost their last three matches, Everton started the brightest of any visiting side at Craven Cottage this season and took an early lead.

Incisive passing through the middle saw the ball fall to Drenthe, who smashed home from 30 yards.

Fulham looked shellshocked as the Toffees continued to press forward and only John Arne Riise's sprawling block thwarted Sylvain Distin minutes later.

Aside from an overhead kick attempt by Clint Dempsey, the visitors were dominating by the Thames and Rodwell was inches away from doubling their lead with a 12th-minute header.

Riise saw a shot blocked and Steve Sidwell fired wide as Fulham tried to gain some authority, before Riise went close with a left-footed half volley.

Everton were still attacking with intent and, after Drenthe tested Mark Schwarzer, Vellios somehow managed to direct Tony Hibbert's cross over the bar with a wayward header from close range.

The play was flitting from one end to the other and the Cottagers came close to levelling through Danny Murphy, who saw a 20-yard strike palmed onto the post by Howard.

The United States goalkeeper was forced into action seconds later to prevent international team-mate Dempsey with a one-handed save.

Howard then managed to tip over Brede Hangeland's goalbound header on the half-hour mark.

Fulham continued to press as half-time approached but only a dipping effort from Dempsey came anywhere near to equalising.

The west Londoners continued to press after the break and a rare Hangeland burst forward forced Hibbert into a last-ditch challenge, before the Norway international then nodded wide.

Everton boss David Moyes replaced Vellios with former Fulham favourite Saha five minutes into the second half in a bid to reinvigorate his attack.

While the Toffees front line needed sprucing up, Phil Jagielka and Distin were performing with aplomb in defence as the Cottagers struggled to find an opening.

Jol brought on summer signing Ruiz in a bid to find a way through and the Costa Rica international provided a moment of magic to force a 67th-minute equaliser.

Neat interplay saw the ball spread left to Ruiz, who produced a exquisite chip over Howard just three minutes after coming on.

The goal spurred Everton into life and Schwarzer did superbly to tip a Saha strike wide from close range.

Play became stretched as both sides searched for the all-important third goal of the day, with Fulham coming closest as Howard saved a close-range Ruiz effort with his feet three minutes from the end.

Fulham thought they had grabbed a last-minute winner through Zamora after he latched on to Andrew Johnson's pass and rounded Howard, but somehow he managed to hit the bar.

The Cottagers were made to pay for their futility seconds later as Saha broke free and managed to squeeze home under pressure from Aaron Hughes and Schwarzer.
